Rotorua's thermal activity welcomes you to this beautiful area with a distinctive scent, wisps of misty steam and a magical landscape of mud pools, bubbling streams and whooshing geysers.

The colours of this activity are obvious everywhere, even in the central city framed by scenic Lake Rotorua. Steam makes its way up through the parks of this garden city, through vents along the road side and wisps its way around the trees of local forests.

Rotorua offers an abundance of geothermal parks and wonderlands.  Here are some examples:

Wai-O-Tapu

Wai-O-Tapu is New Zealand's most colourful natural volcanic environment. After the destruction of the Pink and White Terraces in the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886, Wai-O-Tapu became known as the "New Wonderland" due to the presence of the "Primrose Terrace" the largest silica terrace in the southern hemisphere.
